The term executive function refers to a collection of cognitive activities that control the other cognitive functions and behavior to achieve goals. This includes things like planning, critical thinking, and following social rules. The prefrontal cortex of the anterior frontal lobe, and its connections with multiple cortical and subcortical structures, play a role in executive function. Deficits of executive function are usually noted during the interview of people that spend time with the patient, who may relate that they have had to take over certain activities that require executive function, such as driving, finances, shopping, cooking, or cleaning.
